Hotel When: Friday, July 14th, 2000 9:00 AM SPOTSYLVANIA, VA— Richard Salsman, a senior policy expert with the Center for the Advancement of Capitalism (CAC) and President and Chief Market Strategist of InterMarket Forecasting will address the over 175 participants of Second Renaissance Conference’s “Ideas for the Rational Mind IV” with his call to abolish the nation’s 120 year-old antitrust laws. “More than a century of antitrust law in America provides ample evidence of its injustices,” says Salsman. “Consider only those provisions relating to price setting,” says Salsman. “If a business sets a price above the prices of its rivals, it can be charged with ‘intent to monopolize.’ If it sets a price below those of rivals, it can be charged with ‘predatory pricing’ or ‘unfair competition’ or ‘restraint of trade.’ If it charges a price similar to those of rivals, it can be charged with ‘collusion’ and forming a ‘conspiracy to fix prices.’” “In short,” says Salsman, “the minute anyone goes into business, whatever price policy they adopt, they violate the antitrust laws.” Salsman will address whether the injustices wrought by the antitrust laws have intensified or receded in the past two decades, what economic and legal theories now govern antitrust, and what is the likely future direction of antitrust-law enforcement.
